Paul C. Tang is a cardiac surgery faculty at the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center with a research focus on developing novel technologies for the molecular modulation of donor hearts to improve performance after transplantation. Work is ongoing to develop innovative therapies to improve the ischemic tolerance of donor hearts and increase the longevity of cardiac grafts by minimizing cardiac injury during transplantation. His laboratory investigates epigenetic changes in cardiac graft in order to develop new insights into the process of cardiac cryostatic preservation and reperfusion. His clinical research is focused on outcomes in heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices. The goal is to improve outcomes for patients experiencing advanced heart failure by developing an in-depth understanding of the benefits of various treatment strategies as well as developing new cardiac preservation technologies. Dr. Tang is also clinically active in the surgical treatment of heart failure including mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation. He completed cardiothoracic surgery training at Duke University Medical Center where he also undertook advanced fellowships in heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and aortic surgery. He undertook medical school at the University of New South Wales in Australia, and has a PhD focused on cardiovascular immunology from Yale University. Dr. Tang’s academic work has received a number of research awards from the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Thoracic Surgery Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
