Dr. Dongyan Tan is an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacological Sciences at Stony Brook University in New York. She obtained her Bachelor degree in Life Science from Sun Yat-Sen University in China and her PhD in Biophysics and Physiology from Albert Einstein School of Medicine in 2009. She subsequently moved to Harvard Medical School for her postdoctoral training in Structural Biology and electron microscopy (EM). In 2016, Dr. Tan launched her independent career in Stony Brook University. Dr. Tan has a broad background in biochemistry, biophysics, and cell biology. She also has a demonstrated record of successful collaborations with scientists from different disciplines to address complex biological problems. Her interest in Chromatin biology and genome regulation started at her time in Harvard Medical School. Her lab uses cryo-EM and a variety of biochemical and biophysical approaches to study macromolecules with important functions in gene regulation during normal development and in diseases. Current projects in her lab focus on understanding how histone variants and chromatin-associated proteins modulate the structure and dynamics of chromatin, and on how these processes influence transcription and DNA damage repairs.
