Dr. Artur de Castro Neto has been working with Trypanosomatids for 11 years. He received his master’s degree in 2014 and PhD in 2018 from the Department of Genetics at the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil. There he worked in the laboratory of Dr. Osvaldo de Melo Neto at FIOCRUZ, where his master’s research led to the development of a novel visceral leishmaniasis diagnostic test, fit to humans and dogs. His thesis shed light on genomic events that might have led to Leishmania virulence proteins expansion. In 2018, he started his post-doctoral research in the laboratory of Prof. Sue Vaughan in the Department of Biological and Medical Sciences at Oxford Brookes University in Oxford, UK, where he worked with structural biology of proteins involved in basal body biogenesis and flagellum formation in Trypanosoma brucei. He is currently a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology at Paulista Medical School from the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil in the laboratory of Prof. Renato Mortara. His research is focused on assessing components released by different strains of Trypanosoma cruzi and their role in the parasite’s virulence.
