Keith J. Stine is a Professor of Chemistry and Chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Missouri – Saint Louis. His lab is located in the Center for Nanoscience. Keith J. Stine was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and grew up in New Jersey. He received his BS from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1984 and his Ph.D. in 1988 from MIT under the direction of Carl W. Garland studying liquid crystals. He was a postdoctoral fellow at UCLA in the lab of Charles M. Knobler, studying monolayers and surface chemistry. He joined the faculty at the University of Missouri – Saint Louis in 1990. He served as Chair of the Faculty Senate and University Assembly for two years and has served as Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry since August 2019. His research effort involves studies of modified surfaces and nanostructured materials with a significant focus on nanoporous gold. The surface modification of nanostructures is pursued, focusing on their future applications in bioanalytical chemistry, such as in immunoassays, sensors, or separations, with a particular focus on glycoscience. Other projects concern the study of lipid monolayers and bilayers as models of processes occurring at the surface of cell membranes and the use of these monolayers in molecular recognition studies.
