Dr. Marta Gomes received her PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2007, where she studied signal transduction involving trypanosomatids differentiation during host infection. She completed her post-doctoral training at the University of Illinois at Chicago (IUC) where she studied the externalization of glycolytic molecules as a determinant of innate apoptotic immunity (IAI). Currently, she is a Visiting Assistant Scientist in the Division of Pulmonary, Sleep, Occupational Medicine at Indiana University.

Her current research focuses on the molecular and physiologic factors that promote exaggerated proliferation and resistance to apoptosis of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells, which contributes to pulmonary vascular remodeling associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). She is interested in understanding the metabolic pathways associated with increased proliferation in pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells among patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and its effect on mitochondrial dysfunction.
