Dr. Samuel Oliveira is a Postdoc at Prof. Doug Densmore’s lab and the Manager of the DNA Bio-foundry of Boston University. Samuel has a background in Bioengineering, Microfluidics, Microscopy, and Lab Automation. Samuel is focused on automating the design and fabrication of multi-layer, very large-scale integrated (VLSI) microfluidic devices that enable the dynamic studies of microbial communities and the screening of novel cell-based biosensors. He is particularly interested in deploying reprogrammed microbes embedded into deployable microfluidic devices as bioremediation solutions to detect and monitor microbial diseases in soil and water-based environments. He is also the Senior Manager of the DAMP lab (damplab.org), a Microfluidics fabrication space, leading the development of hardware and software workflows for off-the-shelf services and corporate-sponsored projects. He is primarily focused on developing automation platforms to increase the throughput and reproducibility of experimental protocols, e.g., the engineering of genetic constructs and novel microbial communities.
