Dr. Miyan graduated from the University of Sussex with a degree in Biological Sciences, majoring in Neurobiology in 1978, and a PhD in neurobiology from the University of Glasgow in 1982. He was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in 1986, which he held until 1996, initially at Edinburgh and then Manchester. He has been a senior lecturer in Neuroscience at Manchester since that time. His research has focused on the role of CSF in cortical development and how this can and does go wrong in different neurological conditions, initially focusing on hydrocephalus. His identification of the unique cerebral folate system has led to the development of a treatment that reduces the risk of hydrocephalus which he is currently translating into human trials.
