Eileen M. Barry obtained her PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University. After a few post-doctoral years at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), Baltimore, MD, in 1996, she was recruited as a faculty member in the Center for Vaccine Development, UMSOM. She is a tenured Professor, Chief of the Shigella Vaccine Unit, and the Molecular Microbiology and Immunology Graduate Program Director at UMSOM.

Dr. Barry’s group studies the basic mechanisms of Shigella pathogenesis, using the highly human-relevant enteroid model, to identify effective attenuation strategies for developing live attenuated Shigella and multi-valent Shigella-ETEC vaccines. Several vaccines developed in her lab have advanced to manufacture and clinical trials. Dr. Barry has trained over 50 students fellows, and visiting scientists. She is passionate about educating the next generation of biomedical scientists.
