Dr. Yan Gong is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Repositories, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University. His research interest focuses on the regulation of angiogenesis in multiple neovascular diseases, including retinopathy of prematurity, proliferative diabetic retinopathy and wet age-related macular degeneration. His work contributed to establish and optimize the laser-induced choroidal neovascularization in vivo rodent model for age-related macular degeneration study using a novel image-guided laser system, and to screen drugs using this new model. He investigated the roles of lipids and their metabolites in retinal disorders using oxygen- or streptozotocin-induced retinopathy animal models utilizing mass spectrometry and cellular bioenergetics analytical instruments. His studies initiated several interdisciplinary collaborations to determine complex mechanisms of action with a quantitative comparative transcriptional profiling technique and to develop new surrogate markers for eye diseases.
