Dr. Swati Dey is an assistant professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Her research focuses on the link between the stress "fight or flight" reflex and free radicals, which she has pursued up to the brain (neuro cardiac axis) level, exploring the relationship between nerves and the heart’s response. Her contribution revealed novel mechanisms by which antioxidant pathways scavenge ROS in subcellular compartments and influence oxidative stress in other compartments of cardiac myocytes. Her ongoing research uses a multidisciplinary approach (e.g., in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo) for parallel studies of human and animal models aimed at dissecting molecular and cellular mechanisms and then using the new information to design novel strategies for improved personalized diagnosis and therapy.
