Douglas Muench is a Department of Biological Sciences professor at the University of Calgary. His research is focused on gene regulation at the post-transcriptional level and on plant-based remediation strategies (phytoremediation) of environmental toxins. Doug’s phytoremediation research program integrates cellular, genetic, genomic, and metabolic approaches to understand better and enhance the mechanisms involved in the biodegradation of organic toxins in wastewater. This research focuses on the remediation of organics that are abundant in the large volumes of process-affected water generated from oil sand mining activities.
