Dr. Rajarshi Batabyal earned his PhD in Molecular and Developmental Biology from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore, India. His research focused on identifying the critical and novel roles of two mitochondrial proteases in maintaining hematopoiesis through an oxidative stress-related mechanism, using the Drosophila larval lymph gland as a model system. As part of his doctoral work, he also characterized key properties of the mitochondrial inner membrane protein OCIAD1, employing biochemical and imaging techniques.
Throughout his academic journey, Dr. Batabyal has gained expertise in a range of biological models and techniques. His experience as a Project Assistant, Summer Fellow, and postgraduate researcher in biotechnology has equipped him with skills in mammalian cell culture, plant molecular biology, and murine models. Looking ahead, his research aims to explore the conserved mechanisms of mitochondrial homeostasis in developmental contexts using interdisciplinary approaches across various model systems.
Beyond research, Dr. Batabyal is actively involved in organizing extreme music concerts in Kolkata and is passionate about writing poetry.
