Dr. Tanecia Mitchell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Medicine. Dr. Mitchell has contributed significantly to the study of mitochondria and oxidative stress in kidney related disorders. She obtained her PhD from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences under the mentorship of Dr. Lee Ann MacMillan-Crow. She determined that mitochondrial reactive oxygen species play a significant role in cold storage (ischemia) injury and this could be reduced by the mitochondrial targeted antioxidant, mitoquinone. As a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Victor Darley-Usmar at UAB, Dr. Mitchell discovered that increased oxidative stress and disruption in mitochondrial quality control contributed to beta cell injury in a Type 1 diabetes model. She also contributed to the development of a method evaluating cellular bioenergetics in immune cells, in an effort to potentially monitor health status and disease progression in humans. Dr. Mitchell was subsequently appointed to a faculty position in the UAB Department of Urology, where she investigated the role of monocyte cellular bioenergetics in patients with kidney stone disease. Her current research focuses on studying the impact of diet on crystalluria and macrophage immunometabolism during kidney stone disease using experimental models and clinical trials. Dr. Mitchell aims to discover relevant scientific information to further understand kidney stone formation and to identify potential therapeutic and diagnostic approaches to reduce stone risk.
