Dr. Newpher is an Assistant Professor of the Practice in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University. He received his PhD from Case Western Reserve University, working in the laboratory of Dr. Sandra Lemmon in the Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology. There, he investigated protein interactions between the cytoskeleton and endocytic machinery using a combination of molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, and imaging approaches. Dr. Newpher did his postdoctoral work in the Department of Neurobiology at Duke University in the laboratories of Dr. Michael Ehlers and Dr. Scott Soderling. As a postdoc, he studied the role of postsynaptic membrane trafficking in learning-related synaptic plasticity, as well as the importance of cytoskeletal remodeling in neurological disorders using a combination of imaging, animal behavior, biochemistry, and genetic approaches. As a faculty member at Duke University, he teaches and advises for the Undergraduate Studies in Neuroscience program. He also serves as the director of Duke’s Summer Neuroscience Program of Research, where he provides mentorship and professional development opportunities for undergraduate neuroscience researchers.
