Impairment Assessment

Impairment assessment is an accounting process used to determine whether an asset’s recorded carrying amount exceeds the economic benefits it is expected to generate, which can require a reduction in reported value. When impairment indicators arise, such as declining market conditions or weaker cash flows, accountants compare the carrying amount with the asset’s recoverable amount, based on measures including value in use and fair value less costs of disposal; goodwill is often assessed at the cash-generating-unit level. The resulting impairment loss improves the reliability of financial statements by reflecting diminished asset values and supporting transparent investment and reporting decisions.
