Differential Hand Temperature

Differential hand temperature is the measurable difference in temperature between the two hands or between distinct regions of the hands, providing a noninvasive indicator of peripheral physiological state. It arises as the autonomic nervous system regulates skin blood flow through vasoconstriction and vasodilation, changing heat distribution at the body’s surface. In behavioral research, this measure can help assess physiological responses associated with stress, emotional arousal, attention, or changing environmental conditions. Combined with observed behavior and other physiological signals, differential hand temperature supports research on how autonomic regulation relates to human behavior and may improve understanding of individual responses across experimental settings.

The Rubber Hand Illusion

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Reaching for objects, walking without hitting obstacles, landing on a chair as you sit (instead of falling to the floor), these and all our physical actions depend on an ability to perceive our own bodies in space, to know where our limbs are relative to one another and relative to the rest of the world. One way that the human brain encodes this information is called proprioception, the brain relies on its own control and feedback...

Asepsis is the practice of preventing or breaking the chain of infection. The nurse employs aseptic techniques to prevent the spread of microorganisms and reduce the risk of diseases. Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of aseptic techniques and is classified into medical and surgical asepsis. Medical asepsis includes hand hygiene and the use of gloves. Surgical asepsis, or the sterile technique, refers to practices that render and keep objects and areas free of microorganisms. Hand washing...

Utility of Dissociated Intrinsic Hand Muscle Atrophy in the Diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Dissociated atrophy of intrinsic hand muscles, termed the split hand, appears to be a specific feature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Consequently, a novel neurodiagnostic test, termed the split hand index, was developed to quantify the clinical phenomenon of the split hand, which differentiated ALS from mimic disorders.

Wrist and Hand Examination

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The wrist is a complex joint made up of 8 carpal bones and their numerous articulations and ligaments. Overlying the wrist are the tendons and muscles of the hand and fingers. The hand is made up of 5 metacarpal bones, and the tendons that run to the hand overlie these bones. Finally, the fingers consist of 14 phalanges with their articulations held together by collateral ligaments and volar plates. Common mechanisms of...
