Eeg Alpha Oscillations

EEG alpha oscillations are rhythmic patterns of electrical activity recorded from the scalp, typically occurring at approximately 8–13 Hz, and provide a measurable window into coordinated brain function. They arise from synchronized activity across cortical and thalamocortical networks and are often strongest during relaxed wakefulness with the eyes closed, decreasing when the eyes open or attention increases. In behavioral research, changes in alpha power and timing help characterize attention, arousal, sensory processing, and cognitive control. Because alpha activity varies with mental state and task demands, it supports noninvasive studies of how brain dynamics shape behavior.

EEG is a non-invasive technique that can measure brain activity. The neural activity generates electrical signals that are recorded by EEG electrodes placed on the scalp. When an individual is engaged in performing a cognitive task, brain activity changes and these changes can be recorded on the EEG graph. Therefore, it is a powerful tool for cognitive scientist aiming to better understand the neural correlates associated with different aspects of cognition, which will ultimately help them...

High-density electroencephalography (dEEG) is being used increasingly to study brain development and plasticity in the early years of life. Here we present an application of sophisticated analysis techniques that builds on traditional EEG recording to understand the oscillatory dynamics of rapid auditory processing in the infant brain.

2016

High Frequency Oscillations (HFOs) have emerged as presurgical biomarkers for the identification of the epileptogenic zone in pediatric patients with medically refractory epilepsy. A methodology for the noninvasive recording, detection, and localization of HFOs with simultaneous scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) is presented.
