Egg Color Quantification

Egg color quantification is the objective measurement of eggshell coloration, converting visual traits such as hue, brightness, and saturation into numerical data for scientific comparison. Researchers typically standardize lighting and imaging conditions, then analyze photographs or spectral reflectance measurements within a defined color space to reduce observer bias and distinguish subtle differences among eggs. In behavioral research, these measurements help test whether egg appearance functions as a signal in mate choice, parental responses, brood recognition, or interactions with predators. Quantifying color also supports comparisons among individuals, populations, and environments, linking visible variation with reproductive behavior and ecological pressures.

C. elegans egg-laying behavior can provide important information in developmental, reproductive, and anatomical studies. This video introduces the important steps of an egg laying assay and shows a sample experiment in which a drug is tested for reproductive toxicity.

Drosophila Egg Collection and Dechorionation: A Method to Remove the Outermost Egg Layer

2023

The Drosophila embryo is surrounded by protective outer membranes. To gain access to the embryo, the chorion–the outermost of the membranes–is often removed. This video describes a commonly used method of dechorionation using sodium hypochlorite. The example protocol demonstrates the procedure while employing sterile techniques necessary for axenic or gnotobiotic animal rearing.

Egg Windowing: A Method of Opening Fertilized Chicken Egg Shell to Expose Chorioallantoic Membrane Vasculature

In this video, we describe a technique to open the eggshell of a fertilized chicken egg to expose its chorioallantoic membrane or CAM carrying a network of branching blood vessels. The exposed CAM can be used for in ovo tumor modeling.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Human color vision is impressive. People with normal color vision can tell apart millions of individual hues. Most amazingly, this ability is achieved with fairly simple hardware. Part of the power of human color vision comes from a clever bit of engineering in the human brain. There, color perception relies on what is known as an 'opponent system.' This means that the presence of one kind of stimulus is treated as evidence for...

Color in Coordination Complexes When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human eye.
