Electrocardiograph

An electrocardiograph is an instrument that records the heart’s electrical activity as an electrocardiogram (ECG), providing a noninvasive measure of cardiac function relevant to health and behavior research. Electrodes placed on the skin detect voltage changes generated as electrical impulses travel through the heart, and the device amplifies and displays these signals as waveforms over time. Researchers can analyze heart rate, rhythm, and beat-to-beat variation to examine physiological responses associated with stress, attention, emotion, and social interaction. These measurements help connect observable behavior with autonomic nervous system activity while supporting clinical assessment of cardiovascular abnormalities.

Estimate the Cognitive Load Using Electrocardiographic Measure: A Human-AI Collaborative Task

2025

This protocol describes the use of physiological indicators to measure variations in cognitive load across different task difficulty levels in human-AI collaborative tasks. The findings suggest that people adapt their decision-making processes according to task difficulty, thereby reflecting different levels of cognitive load.

2025

This study introduces a novel approach for real-time cardiac mapping using a noninvasive, imageless electrocardiographic imaging system. This system enables the acquisition of electrophysiological cardiac maps without requiring pre-procedural computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging scans, enabling efficient guidance for cardiac procedures such as ablation and cardiac resynchronization therapy implants.

Instrumentation of Near-term Fetal Sheep for Multivariate Chronic Non-anesthetized Recordings

The chronically instrumented non-anesthetized fetal sheep model is used to study human fetal development in health and disease, because it permits surgical placement and maintenance of catheters and electrodes, repetitive blood sampling, substance injection, recording of bioelectrical activity, and in vivo imaging. We describe the procedures required to establish this model.

2023

Source: Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti and Sina Shahbazmohamadi, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut An electrocardiograph is a graph recorded by electric potential changes occurring between electrodes placed on a patient's torso to demonstrate cardiac activity. An ECG signal tracks heart rhythm and many cardiac diseases, such as poor blood flow to the heart and structural abnormalities. The action potential created by contractions of the heart wall...
