Hidden Curriculum

The hidden curriculum is the collection of implicit norms, values, expectations, and social behaviors people learn alongside a formal curriculum, making it an important influence on behavior and socialization. It operates through classroom routines, institutional rules, teacher-student interactions, peer relationships, and patterns of reward or discipline, often communicating messages about authority, cooperation, identity, and belonging without explicit instruction. Studying the hidden curriculum helps educators identify how learning environments shape conduct, participation, and social roles, while revealing ways schools may reproduce or challenge cultural assumptions and inequities. This perspective informs classroom management, inclusive teaching, and educational policy.
