Mouse Colony Monitoring

Mouse colony monitoring is the systematic assessment of a laboratory mouse population to track health, reproduction, genotype, welfare, and behavior over time. It combines standardized observations with organized records of animal identification, breeding outcomes, physical condition, activity, and environmental changes, allowing researchers to distinguish normal variation from meaningful deviations. In behavioral research, consistent monitoring helps identify phenotypes, recognize potential welfare concerns, and maintain comparable experimental groups. It also supports colony management by informing breeding decisions, improving data quality, and detecting changes that could influence behavioral results or the reproducibility of studies.

Keratinocyte Colony Formation Assay: An In Vitro Assay to Assess the Ability of Keratinocytes to Grow into Colonies

2023

In this video, we perform a clonogenic assay of keratinocytes harvested from adult mice to determine the ability of individual cells to proliferate and form colonies. This keratinocyte harvesting technique is useful for studying other downstream aspects of cutaneous chemical carcinogenesis and tumor promotion.

Monitoring Colony-level Effects of Sublethal Pesticide Exposure on Honey Bees

2017

Sublethal doses of pesticides may affect colonies in ways that are difficult to detect using only periodic or visual methods. Methods to measure total adult bee mass, brood, and food resources by weighing hives and hive parts, photographing frames, and installing sensors, are provided. Data analysis is also addressed.

A Video Surveillance System to Monitor Breeding Colonies of Common Terns (Sterna Hirundo)

This paper describes a protocol that uses a remote video monitoring surveillance system to continuously monitor breeding colonies of ground-nesting waterbirds. The system includes five cameras monitoring individual nests and one camera monitoring the colony as a whole, and is powered by car batteries that are recharged via solar panels.

Triggering and Monitoring Heat-Induced Seizures in a Transgenic Mouse Model
