Mri Safety

MRI safety is the set of practices used to protect people, equipment, and data during magnetic resonance imaging, where powerful fields and radiofrequency energy create unique hazards. The static magnetic field can attract ferromagnetic objects, while radiofrequency pulses may heat conductive materials and rapidly switching gradient fields produce loud acoustic noise and nerve stimulation. Safety therefore relies on screening for implants and metal objects, controlling access to the scanner room, using hearing protection, and monitoring participants throughout imaging. In behavioral research, these measures support ethical participation and reliable data by reducing discomfort, preventing avoidable injury, and helping participants remain still and follow task instructions.

Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Among the many hazards present in the laboratory, electrical hazards are one of the most common we must be cognizant of since most of the laboratory equipment we use requires electricity for operation. Improper handling or operation of electrical devices might lead to electric shock with the potential risk of injury or even death. Electric sparks can lead to fire or explosion (since many flammable...

Surveying near highways, rough terrain, or power lines involves significant risks. Working along highways is particularly dangerous and requires the use of warning signs and flagmen. It is safest to avoid working directly on roads and use offsets whenever possible. When highway work is unavoidable, it must follow all safety guidelines. Surveyors should wear bright clothing, such as orange reflective vests, to ensure visibility to motorists, coworkers, and hunters. In construction zones, wearing...

Non-invasive imaging of the brain vasculature’s ability to dilate or constrict may allow a better understanding of cerebrovascular pathophysiology in various neurological diseases. The present report describes a reproducible and patient-comfortable protocol to perform vascular reactivity imaging in humans using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Electric machines and power electronics experiments involve electrical currents, voltages, power, and energy quantities that should be handled with extreme diligence and care. These may include three-phase AC voltage (208 V, 230 V, or 480 V), up to 250 V DC voltages, and currents that can reach 10 A. Electrocution occurs when an electrical path is established through the body with very low currents...
