Polio Survivors

Polio survivors are people who lived through infection with poliovirus, a disease that can leave lasting motor impairment and shape long-term health, participation, and behavior. During acute infection, the virus can damage motor neurons in the spinal cord, producing weakness or paralysis; years later, some survivors develop new muscle weakness, fatigue, pain, or reduced endurance associated with post-polio syndrome. Behavioral research examines how these physical changes influence activity choices, mobility strategies, social participation, emotional adjustment, and responses to rehabilitation, helping researchers and clinicians design accessible interventions that support informed, sustainable daily functioning.

This protocol is intended to investigate the impact of task conditions on movement strategies in chronic stroke survivors. Further, this protocol can be used to examine if a restriction in elbow extension induced by neuromuscular electrical stimulation causes trunk compensation during goal-directed arm reaches in non-disabled adults.

Monitoring Intraspecies Competition in a Bacterial Cell Population by Cocultivation of Fluorescently Labelled Strains

Bacteria may accumulate either detrimental or beneficial mutations during their lifetime. In a population of cells individuals that have accumulated beneficial mutations may rapidly outcompete their fellows. Here we present a simple procedure to visualize intraspecies competition in a bacterial cell population over time using fluorescently labeled...
