Preschooler Assessment

Preschooler assessment is the systematic evaluation of young children’s developmental, emotional, social, and behavioral functioning to clarify strengths and identify areas needing support. In behavior-focused assessment, professionals gather information through structured observation, caregiver or teacher reports, interviews, and developmentally appropriate screening tools, then compare patterns across settings and situations. This process helps distinguish expected variation from persistent concerns while considering communication, relationships, routines, and environmental influences. Findings can guide classroom strategies, family support, early intervention, and referrals for further evaluation, making preschooler assessment an important foundation for promoting healthy development and responsive educational practice.

Source: Heather Collette and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The key to a successful exam of a toddler or preschool-age child is building rapport and trust between them and the provider. Toddlers, in particular, may be wary of strangers and unwilling to cooperate with the physical exam, which is expected age-appropriate behavior. In order to provide good care and create a comfortable patient experience, clinicians need to tailor their interaction to the child's developmental stage.

Here, we present a comprehensive behavioral test battery, including the novel tank, Shoaling, and social preference tests, to effectively determine the potential neurotoxic effects of chemicals (e.g., methamphetamine and glyphosate) on adult zebrafish using a single tank. This method is relevant to neurotoxicity and environmental research.
