Word Frequency

Word frequency is the number of times a particular word appears within a defined body of text, providing a basic measure of language use and behavioral expression. Researchers calculate it by counting word occurrences in transcripts, written responses, or digital records, often normalizing counts by document length and comparing patterns across individuals, groups, or conditions. In behavior research, word frequency can help characterize communication, identify recurring topics, quantify changes in verbal behavior, and evaluate responses to experimental or environmental conditions. Combined with contextual and qualitative analysis, it supports systematic study of how language reflects cognition, interaction, and observable behavior.

Researchers adopt both the lexical decision task and the naming task to investigate some important topics such as character/word recognition by comparing the frequency effect between these two tasks. This article introduces this approach through two exemplar experiments and elaborates on the underlying logic.

What is a Frequency Distribution

2023

A frequency is the number of times a value of the data occurs. The sum of all the frequency values represents the total number of students included in the sample. It is commonly used to group data of quantitative types. Frequency distributions can be displayed in a table, histogram, line graph, dot plot, or pie chart, just to name a few. A histogram is a graphical representation of tabulated frequencies, shown as adjacent rectangles, erected over discrete intervals (bins), with an area equal to...

Mean From a Frequency Distribution

Sometimes, data gathered from an experiment on a large sample or population are organized into concise tables. In such cases, the frequency of the quantitative data set is plotted in the form of a table. Or else, the data values are grouped into the quantity’s intervals, which form classes, and their respective frequencies are known. That is, the data values are distributed over different categories or classes. This is known as frequency distribution. When such a data set is encountered, the...

We present a protocol to explore the relative activation sequence of phonology and semantics in visual word recognition. The results show that consistent with interactive accounts, semantic and phonological representations may be processed interactively, and higher-level linguistic representations may affect early processing.
