Wrist-worn Accelerometer

A wrist-worn accelerometer is a compact sensor that measures changes in motion and orientation, providing an objective way to quantify physical activity and behavior. Its sensing element detects acceleration along one or more axes, and the recorded signal can be processed into movement patterns, activity intensity, and periods of relative stillness over time. In behavioral research, these devices support studies of daily routines, sedentary behavior, sleep-related movement, exercise, and responses to environmental or clinical conditions. Because they collect data continuously in natural settings, wrist-worn accelerometers can complement self-reports and help researchers examine behavior with greater temporal detail and less reliance on participant recall.

Wrist and Hand Examination

2015

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The wrist is a complex joint made up of 8 carpal bones and their numerous articulations and ligaments. Overlying the wrist are the tendons and muscles of the hand and fingers. The hand is made up of 5 metacarpal bones, and the tendons that run to the hand overlie these bones. Finally, the fingers consist of 14 phalanges with their articulations held together by collateral ligaments and volar plates. Common mechanisms of...

Assessment of Physical Activity Intensity with Accelerometers and Oxygen Consumption

2025

Here, we present a protocol to assess physical activity intensity levels measured with indirect calorimetry and two accelerometers (on the right wrist and waist) during an incremental walking-jogging test (from 0.84 to 2.37 m/s) on an oval track. The results show differences among the physical intensity assessed through those methods.

Evaluation of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Wrist Wearables to Estimate Stress on Students

A protocol to evaluate solutions based on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) wrist wearables to estimate stress in students is proposed. The protocol is carried out in two phases, an initial laboratory-based stress induction test, and a monitoring stage taking place in the classroom while the student is performing academic activities.
