Burst Strength Measurement

Burst strength measurement is a mechanical test that determines the maximum internal pressure a material, vessel, or tubular construct can withstand before rupturing. In bioengineering, the specimen is gradually pressurized under controlled conditions while pressure, deformation, and the point of failure are recorded; the resulting burst pressure reflects the combined effects of material strength, wall thickness, geometry, and structural defects. This measurement helps evaluate vascular grafts, tissue-engineered conduits, catheters, and other pressure-bearing biomedical devices. Comparing burst strength across designs supports device selection, quality control, and safer development of implants that must maintain integrity under physiological or laboratory loading.

Source: Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti and Sina Shahbazmohamadi, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut For over 4000 years, sutures have been used as a medical intervention. The earliest records indicate linen was the biomaterial of choice. Catgut, which is still in use today, was reportedly used to treat gladiators around 150 AD. Today, there are numerous materials being used for sutures. Sutures are classified by their composition (natural or...

Manual Muscle Testing: A Method of Measuring Extremity Muscle Strength Applied to Critically Ill Patients

Survivors of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and critical illness frequently develop long-lasting muscle weakness. Manual muscle testing (MMT) is a standardized clinical examination commonly used to measure strength of peripheral skeletal muscle groups. This video demonstrates MMT using the 6-point Medical Research Council scale.

Binary Acids and Bases In the absence of any leveling effect, the acid strength of binary compounds of hydrogen with nonmetals (A) increases as the H-A bond strength decreases down a group in the periodic table. For group 17, the order of increasing acidity is HF < HCl < HBr < HI. Likewise, for group 16, the order of increasing acid strength is H2O < H2S < H2Se < H2Te. Across a row in the periodic table, the acid strength of binary hydrogen compounds increases with increasing...
