Classifier Training

Classifier training is the process of teaching a computational model to assign observations to predefined categories, a foundational task in machine learning and bioengineering. During training, the model receives labeled examples, converts measured features into numerical representations, and adjusts parameters to reduce a loss function through iterative optimization; validation data then helps assess generalization and limit overfitting. In bioengineering, trained classifiers can distinguish cell types from imaging data, identify disease-associated patterns in biosignals, or analyze genomic and molecular measurements, enabling faster, more reproducible interpretation while requiring careful attention to data quality, class imbalance, and model performance.

Classifying Matter by Composition

2020

Matter: Pure Substances and Mixtures According to its composition, the matter can be classified into two broad categories — pure substances and mixtures. A pure substance is a form of matter that has a constant composition throughout with uniform properties. For example, any sample of sucrose has the same composition and same physical properties, such as melting point, color, and sweetness, regardless of the source from which it is isolated. A mixture is composed of two or more types of...

Classifying Matter by State

2020

Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Matter is all around us; the air, water, soil, mountains, even our bodies are all examples of matter. Matter is divided into three states — solid, liquid, and gas — that are commonly found on earth. The fourth state of matter, plasma, occurs naturally in the interiors of stars. Solids are characterized by a definite shape and volume. In a solid, the particles (atoms or...

How Data are Classified: Numerical Data

2023

Data that are countable or measurable in specific units are called numerical or quantitative data. Quantitative data are always numbers. Quantitative data are the result of counting or measuring the attributes of a population. Amount of money, pulse rate, weight, number of people living in a town, and number of students who opt for statistics are examples of quantitative data. Quantitative data may be either discrete or continuous. All quantitative data that take on only specific numerical...

Training and Competency in Animal Procedures

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. A Stepwise Approach to Training Proper training and competency in animal procedures are essential to ensure high standards of animal welfare and reliable scientific outcomes. A structured, progressive training approach is...

2015

Shuttle-box avoidance learning is well-established in behavioral neuroscience. This protocol describes how shuttle-box learning in rodents can be combined with site-specific electrical intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) and simultaneous chronical in vivo recordings as a tool to study multiple aspects of learning and perception.
