Collagen Flow Rate

Collagen flow rate is the volume of collagen solution delivered through a device per unit time, a key parameter for controlling reproducibility in bioengineering processes. It depends on solution viscosity, applied pressure, pump settings, and nozzle geometry; these factors influence shear conditions, filament formation, and the timing of collagen deposition or gelation. In collagen-based bioprinting and scaffold fabrication, carefully tuning flow rate helps produce consistent structures, regulate material distribution, and protect embedded cells from excessive mechanical stress. Measuring and controlling this parameter supports reliable fabrication of tissue-engineering constructs and improves comparisons among experimental systems.

Mass Conservation and Flow Rate Measurements

2023

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...

Collagen Hydrogels

2023

Collagen is another widely used biomaterial that has found popularity in commercial applications, such as photography. Collagen has more recently been used in tissue engineering applications, by creating hydrogels that provide structure to engineered tissue. This video introduces collagen as a biomaterial, demonstrates how it is harvested from porcine skin, and shows how the material is used to create a hydrogel for tissue engineering applications. Finally, several applications of the material...

This video describes the rheotaxis assay in zebrafish. The method involves the measurement of orientation behavior of zebrafish in response to different water flow rates under the influence of different magnetic fields.

Renal Drug Excretion: Effect of Urine pH, Flow Rate, and Drug pKa

2025

The pH of urine, the drug's pKa, and the urine flow rate are vital parameters for drug reabsorption and excretion. Urinary pH varies between 4.6 and 8.0 and is influenced by diet, drug intake, and the patient's pathophysiology. It affects a drug's ionization state and reabsorption. For instance, carbohydrate-rich food produces alkaline urine promoting drug excretion, while proteins and certain medications like ascorbic acid lead to acidic urine enhancing reabsorption. The pKa of a drug,...
