Flow Pressure Measurements

Flow pressure measurements quantify the pressure exerted by a moving fluid and the pressure differences that drive or resist flow, making them essential for characterizing transport in biological and engineered systems. Devices such as pressure transducers and differential manometers convert pressure forces into measurable signals, while pressure gradients reveal flow resistance, changes in fluid velocity, and system performance. In bioengineering, these measurements help evaluate blood flow, microfluidic devices, perfusion systems, respiratory circuits, and biomaterial-based conduits. Accurate pressure data support device design, physiological modeling, quality control, and the detection of blockages, leaks, or abnormal flow conditions.

Cross Cylindrical Flow: Measuring Pressure Distribution and Estimating Drag Coefficients

2023

Source: David Guo, College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics (CETA), Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), Manchester, New Hampshire The pressure distributions and drag estimations for cross cylindrical flow have been investigated for centuries. By ideal inviscid potential flow theory, the pressure distribution around a cylinder is vertically symmetric. The pressure distribution upstream and downstream of the cylinder is also symmetric, which results in a zero-net drag force.

Noninvasive Blood Pressure Measurement Techniques

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...

Measuring Turbulent Flows

2023

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Turbulent flows exhibit very high frequency fluctuations that require instruments with high time-resolution for their appropriate characterization. Hot-wire anemometers have a short enough time-response to fulfill this requirement. The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the use of hot-wire anemometry to characterize a turbulent jet. In this...

2009

The CODA 8-Channel High Throughput Non-Invasive Blood Pressure system measures the blood pressure in up to 8 mice or rats simultaneously. This tail-cuff system uses Volume Pressure Recording (VPR) to measure the blood pressure by determining the tail blood volume.

Spatial Measurement of Tumor Interstitial Fluid Pressure: A Method to Measure the Interstitial Fluid Pressure

2023

This video describes a technique of measuring the interstitial fluid pressure within a tumor by perfusion imaging using an image-guided robotic system. Measurements are compared to the intra-tumoral accumulation of liposomes, within a solid tumor.
