Hierarchical Composites

Hierarchical composites are materials in which distinct constituents and structural features are organized across multiple length scales, allowing the material to combine properties that a single component cannot provide. Their performance depends on interfaces between phases, where nanoscale or microscale reinforcements transfer stress through a matrix and larger-scale architecture distributes loads, controls porosity, or guides deformation. In bioengineering, this design principle supports biomimetic scaffolds, implant coatings, and prosthetic materials that balance strength, flexibility, degradation, and biological compatibility. By linking composition with architecture, hierarchical composites can more closely reproduce the organization of tissues such as bone and enable improved mechanical integration and tissue regeneration.

Classifying Matter by Composition

2020

Matter: Pure Substances and Mixtures According to its composition, the matter can be classified into two broad categories — pure substances and mixtures. A pure substance is a form of matter that has a constant composition throughout with uniform properties. For example, any sample of sucrose has the same composition and same physical properties, such as melting point, color, and sweetness, regardless of the source from which it is isolated. A mixture is composed of two or more types of...

Ultrasonic Welding of Thermoplastic Composite Coupons for Mechanical Characterization of Welded Joints through Single Lap Shear Testing

2016

A straightforward procedure for ultrasonic welding of thermoplastic composite coupons for basic mechanical testing is described. Key characteristics of this ultrasonic welding process are the use of flat energy directors for simplified process preparation and the use of process data for the fast definition of optimum processing conditions.

Hierarchical and Programmable One-Pot Oligosaccharide Synthesis

A protocol to expose bare fibers on the composite surface by eliminating resin rich area is presented. The fibers are exposed during fabrication of the composites, not by the post surface treatment. The exposed carbon composites exhibit high electrical conductivity in the through-thickness direction and high mechanical property.
