Led Excitation

LED excitation is the use of light-emitting diodes to provide controlled illumination that activates fluorescent, photochemical, or light-responsive biological systems. By selecting an LED with an appropriate emission wavelength, researchers deliver photons that excite fluorophores or photosensitive molecules; optical filters and detectors then separate the resulting signal from the excitation light. In bioengineering, this approach supports fluorescence microscopy, biosensors, microfluidic assays, and optogenetic platforms. LEDs offer compact hardware, low heat generation, rapid switching, and tunable intensity, enabling accessible, precise measurements and stimulation in cell studies, diagnostic devices, and engineered biological systems.

This abstract describes a novel method to assess the development of neurotoxicity in patients receiving chemotherapy treatment. While conventional assessment methods are limited in their ability to detect early changes in nerve function, nerve excitability techniques provide early identification of patients at risk of severe neurotoxicity and insight into pathophysiology.

Using TMS to Measure Motor Excitability During Action Observation

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...
