Media Optimization

Media optimization is the systematic refinement of culture-medium composition and conditions to support consistent, efficient growth or function of cells, microorganisms, or engineered tissues. In bioengineering, researchers vary factors such as nutrients, salts, growth factors, pH, osmolality, and oxygen availability, then measure responses including viability, proliferation, product yield, or differentiation to identify effective formulations. Statistical design of experiments and controlled, iterative testing can reveal interactions among medium components while reducing costly trial and error. Optimized media improve bioprocess performance, cell-based assays, tissue engineering, and production of biologics, helping translate laboratory systems into reliable and scalable applications.

Optimal Foraging Organisms must acquire and use resources in their environment to survive. While food is one of the primary resources organisms must search for, individuals also need to seek habitats, shelter, and mates. This process of searching for resources is known as foraging, which involves a series of costs and benefits. More specifically, acquiring a resource provides the organism with a benefit, however, searching and capturing the resource requires expenditure of time and energy.
