Polymer Morphology Analysis

Polymer morphology analysis is the study of how a polymer’s molecular arrangement, phase structure, and surface features influence its physical and biological performance. It works by characterizing features such as crystallinity, domain size, porosity, roughness, and phase separation with imaging, scattering, thermal, or spectroscopic methods, linking observed structure to processing conditions and composition. In bioengineering, this analysis helps researchers evaluate scaffolds, hydrogels, membranes, and drug-delivery materials, where morphology can affect mechanical strength, degradation, transport, cell adhesion, and biomolecule release. These structure-property relationships guide material design and improve the reproducibility and function of devices intended for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

The word polymer is derived from the Greek words “poly” which means “many” and “mer” which means “parts”. Polymers are long chains of molecules composed of repeating units of smaller molecules, known as monomers. They either occur naturally, such as DNA and proteins, or can be constructed synthetically, like plastics. They have varied structural characteristics, such as linear chains, branched chains, or complex networks, that contribute to the properties that they exhibit. Additionally,...
