Antiparasitic Drug

An antiparasitic drug is a compound used to prevent or treat infections caused by parasites, including protozoa and helminths, and is important in clinical medicine, veterinary care, and public health. These drugs act through selective toxicity, disrupting parasite-specific processes such as energy production, nucleic acid synthesis, neuromuscular signaling, or maintenance of the cell membrane. Biological techniques help evaluate drug activity by measuring parasite survival, growth, reproduction, and cellular responses in culture or infected model systems. Such studies support treatment selection, dose optimization, resistance monitoring, and the development of safer therapies for neglected and emerging parasitic diseases.

Luciferase Assay to Study Efficacy of Antiparasitic Chemicals Against Parasites

2025

The video demonstrates the luciferase assay used to determine the efficacy of an antiparasitic chemical inhibitor against the intracellular pathogen Toxoplasma gondii. The study involves luciferase-expressing parasites invading the host cells to replicate and survive. The chemical inhibitor binds with the cysteine proteases of the parasite and inhibits replication. The luciferase activity detected is proportional to the fold changes in parasite growth, determining the drug's efficacy against...

β-Galactosidase Assay to Evaluate Drug-Induced Cytotoxicity in Parasites

2023

In this video, we describe a simple and robust method to determine the cytotoxic potential of a trypanocidal drug against a parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, expressing the β-galactosidase enzyme. β-galactosidase serves as a cell lysis indicator, and its activity can be used to assess the effects of the drug.

An Introduction to Parasitic Wasps of Drosophila and the Antiparasite Immune Response

A simple and general method for the synthesis of cyclic peptides using microwave irradiation is outlined. This procedure enables the synthesis of backbone cyclic peptides with a collection of different conformations while retaining the side chains and the pharmacophoric moieties., and therefore, allows to screen for the bioactive conformation.
