Animal Dosing

Animal dosing is the controlled administration of a drug, compound, or biological material to an animal at a defined amount, concentration, and schedule. Doses are commonly calculated from body weight or body surface area, then delivered by routes such as oral, intravenous, intraperitoneal, or subcutaneous injection; absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion determine the resulting exposure and response. In biology, accurate animal dosing supports studies of pharmacology, toxicology, disease mechanisms, and treatment efficacy. Careful control of formulation, dose volume, timing, and administration technique improves reproducibility, supports humane research, and helps researchers interpret relationships between exposure, biological effects, and safety.

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. A Stepwise Approach to Training Proper training and competency in animal procedures are essential to ensure high standards of animal welfare and reliable scientific outcomes. A structured, progressive training approach is...

2025

Determining the optimal dose size and dosing frequency in pharmacotherapy is crucial for achieving therapeutic effectiveness while minimizing adverse effects. This article explores the methodologies employed in determining these parameters, focusing on their significance and interplay to tailor dosing regimens.Dose Size: Dose size refers to the amount of a drug administered in a single dose. It is determined based on the drug's pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics properties and...

Determination of Multiple Dosing Parameters: Loading and Maintenance Doses

A loading dose is an essential pharmacological strategy to rapidly achieve the target plasma drug concentration necessary for an immediate therapeutic effect. This approach is especially critical for drugs characterized by slow absorption or extended half-lives, where delaying therapeutic plasma levels could compromise treatment outcomes. By administering a loading dose, clinicians ensure a prompt onset of drug action, even for agents with complex pharmacokinetic profiles.Achieving steady-state...
