Biopesticides

Biopesticides are pest-management products derived from living organisms or naturally occurring substances that control insects, weeds, pathogens, or other agricultural pests, often with greater target specificity than conventional chemical pesticides. Microbial biopesticides act through infection, toxins, or growth disruption, while biochemical products interfere with pest behavior, development, or feeding; effectiveness depends on environmental conditions and application timing. In biology and crop protection, biopesticides support integrated pest management by reducing reliance on broad-spectrum chemicals and helping manage resistance when used alongside compatible control methods. Their study informs environmental risk assessment and the development of more sustainable approaches to protecting crops.

Biopesticides offer a sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides, utilizing microbial agents to control agricultural pests. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a widely employed bacterium known for its potent insecticidal activity. Bt biopesticides are favored for their specificity to insect pests, minimal environmental impact, and natural degradability.Mechanism of Bt Toxin Action Bt produces insecticidal crystal (Cry) proteins during its sporulation phase. These proteins form parasporal...

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Bradley Schmitz Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) involves the same process as conventional PCR — cycling temperature to amplify nucleic acids. However, while conventional PCR only amplifies deoxyribonucleic acids (DNA), RT-PCR enables the amplification of ribonucleic acids (RNA) through the formation of complementary DNA (cDNA). This enables RNA-based organisms...
