Bulbus Cordis

The bulbus cordis is an embryonic segment of the primitive heart tube that helps form the ventricular outflow region and is essential for establishing the mature four-chambered heart. During cardiac looping and septation, its proximal portion is incorporated into the trabeculated right ventricle, while the conus cordis contributes to the smooth outflow tracts of both ventricles; neural crest cells help organize the conotruncal septum. Understanding bulbus cordis development clarifies how the pulmonary and systemic circulations become separated and helps explain congenital conotruncal defects, including persistent truncus arteriosus and transposition of the great arteries.

Use of zebrafish for cardiovascular research is expanding towards research on adult hearts. For these applications, quick and simple isolation of cardiac tissues is key to avoid post-mortem changes and to obtain an adequate number of samples. Here, we describe a fast and reproducible method for dissecting adult zebrafish hearts.
