C Elegans Lifespan

C. elegans lifespan is the time a Caenorhabditis elegans nematode survives under defined laboratory conditions, making it a practical measure for studying aging and longevity. Lifespan is influenced by genetic and environmental factors, including insulin/IGF-1 signaling, dietary conditions, stress responses, and mitochondrial function; changes in the daf-2 pathway can alter activity of the DAF-16 transcription factor and extend survival. Researchers use lifespan assays to identify conserved regulators of aging, evaluate environmental or genetic interventions, and connect molecular processes with organism-level health. Findings from this short-lived model support comparative studies of longevity biology across species.

Many animals naturally stop growing upon reaching adulthood, after which they undergo aging or "senescence" until dying. The amount of time between an organism\'s birth and death is called its lifespan, which can be influenced by various biological and environmental factors. By exposing organisms to different growth conditions, scientists can better understand the factors affecting lifespan. Flies and worms are ideal organisms to perform such experiments, given their short generation time and...

The easiness of maintaining and propagating the nematode C. elegans make it a nice model organism to work with. The possibility of synchronizing worms allows the work with a significant amount of subjects at the same developmental stage, what facilitates the study of one particular process in many animals.

An Introduction to Caenorhabditis elegans

Caenorhabditis elegans is a microscopic, soil-dwelling roundworm that has been powerfully used as a model organism since the early 1970’s. It was initially proposed as a model for developmental biology because of its invariant body plan, ease of genetic manipulation and low cost of maintenance. Since then C. elegans has rapidly grown in popularity and is now utilized in numerous research endeavors, from studying the forces at work during locomotion to studies of neural circuitry.
