Carbohydrate Composition Analysis

Carbohydrate composition analysis is the identification and measurement of the sugars and polysaccharides present in a biological sample, providing insight into its structure, function, and nutritional or physiological role. The analysis commonly involves hydrolyzing complex carbohydrates into constituent monosaccharides, separating them by chromatography, and quantifying them with detector signals or enzyme-based colorimetric assays. In biology, these measurements help characterize cell walls, extracellular matrices, glycoconjugates, plant tissues, and microbial products. Comparing carbohydrate profiles can reveal changes associated with development, disease, metabolism, or environmental conditions, supporting research in biochemistry, nutrition, biotechnology, and biomarker development.
