Colony Growth Measurement

Colony Growth Measurement is the quantitative assessment of how microbial colonies increase in number, size, or biomass over time, providing a practical indicator of population growth in biology. Researchers typically culture cells on solid media, record colony-forming units or colony dimensions at defined intervals, and analyze changes using manual counts, imaging, or software-based measurements; growth depends on nutrients, temperature, incubation time, and other environmental conditions. These measurements help estimate viable cell numbers, compare growth rates, evaluate antimicrobial effects, and assess microbial physiology. Standardized colony analysis also supports clinical microbiology, environmental monitoring, biotechnology, and experiments investigating genetic or metabolic changes.

2014

ScanLag is a high-throughput method for measuring the delay in growth, namely lag time, as well as the growth rate of colonies for thousands of cells in parallel. Screening using ScanLag enables the discrimination between long lag-time and slow growth at the level of a single variant.

Video bioinformatics is the automated processing, analysis, understanding, and data mining of biological spatio-temporal data extracted from microscopic videos. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate a method for measuring human embryonic stem cell colony growth using a video bioinformatics method.

Keratinocyte Colony Formation Assay: An In Vitro Assay to Assess the Ability of Keratinocytes to Grow into Colonies

2023

In this video, we perform a clonogenic assay of keratinocytes harvested from adult mice to determine the ability of individual cells to proliferate and form colonies. This keratinocyte harvesting technique is useful for studying other downstream aspects of cutaneous chemical carcinogenesis and tumor promotion.
