Controlled Pollination

Controlled pollination is the deliberate transfer of pollen between selected flowers to regulate which plants reproduce and which traits appear in their offspring. In practice, researchers or breeders prevent unwanted pollen through isolation, bagging, or removal of anthers, then apply pollen from a chosen donor to a receptive stigma before labeling and monitoring the cross. This process supports studies of plant reproduction, inheritance, and mating systems while advancing crop improvement through the combination of traits such as yield, disease resistance, and environmental tolerance. Resulting seeds can be evaluated to assess hybrid performance and guide subsequent breeding.

Pollination and Flower Structure

2020

Flowers are the reproductive, seed-producing structures of angiosperms. Typically, flowers consist of sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels. Sepals and petals are the vegetative flower organs. Stamens and carpels are the reproductive organs. Flowers must be pollinated to produce seeds. In angiosperms, pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther of the stamen (the male structure) to the stigma of the carpel (the female structure). Flowers may be self-pollinated or cross-pollinated.
