Corpora Quadrigemina

The corpora quadrigemina are four rounded structures on the dorsal midbrain that form the tectum and coordinate rapid sensory responses. They consist of paired superior and inferior colliculi: the superior colliculi integrate visual information to guide orienting movements, while the inferior colliculi process auditory signals and contribute to sound-triggered reflexes. Through connections with sensory pathways, motor centers, and the thalamus, these nuclei help direct the eyes, head, and body toward relevant stimuli. Studying the corpora quadrigemina supports understanding of sensory integration, reflex behavior, midbrain organization, and neurological disorders involving visual or auditory processing.
