Differential Media

Differential media are culture media designed to distinguish microorganisms based on visible differences produced by their metabolic activities, making them important for identifying and comparing microbes in biology. They contain specific nutrients or substrates and indicators that respond to biochemical reactions, such as acid production during lactose fermentation or red blood cell lysis, causing colonies or surrounding media to change color or appearance. Examples include lactose-differentiating media and blood agar, which help researchers and clinical laboratories assess microbial traits, narrow potential identifications, and study community composition. These media support diagnostic testing, environmental microbiology, and investigations of microbial physiology.
