Disturbance Regimes

Disturbance regimes describe the characteristic patterns of environmental disruptions, including their frequency, intensity, size, timing, and duration, within an ecosystem. Disturbances such as fire, storms, floods, drought, disease, and herbivory alter habitat structure and resource availability, influencing mortality, reproduction, succession, and species interactions. By determining which organisms persist and how communities recover, disturbance regimes help shape biodiversity, ecosystem function, and landscape structure. Studying these patterns supports conservation planning, habitat restoration, and prediction of ecological responses to land-use change and climate-driven shifts in disturbance frequency or severity.

Ecological Disturbance

2026

An ecological disturbance is a temporary disruption in the environment resulting from abiotic, biotic, or anthropogenic factors, causing a pronounced change in an ecosystem. The impact of an ecological disturbance, which can depend on its intensity, frequency, and spatial distribution, plays a significant role in shaping the species diversity within the ecosystem.Ecological disturbances can be caused by an event as small as the trampling of underbrush to an incident as wide-ranging as a forest...

Disturbances in Heart Rhythm

2025

Arrhythmia or dysrhythmia refers to an abnormal heart rhythm caused by a defect in the heart's conduction system. It can cause the heart to beat irregularly, too quickly, or too slowly, leading to symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, and fainting. Factors such as stress, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, certain drugs, congenital defects, diseases, and electrolyte abnormalities can trigger arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are categorized by their speed, rhythm, and origin. A slow heart...

A Hemocyte Disturbance Assay to Assess Hemocyte Re-Adhesion to Hematopoietic Pockets

2025

This video demonstrates the hemocyte disturbance assay, evaluating hemocyte re-adhesion in Drosophila larvae's hematopoietic pockets. Mechanical disturbance releases resident hemocytes, elevating circulating hemocyte counts. Post-recovery, re-adherence of resident hemocytes is confirmed, illustrating reversibility.

This publication describes the design of laboratory photobioreactors (PBRs) with customizable light regimes. The growth of cyanobacteria or microalgae, using bicarbonate as their carbon source, is monitored continuously by measuring volumetric oxygen production. These PBRs facilitate rapid, replicated laboratory growth comparisons with little user intervention during experiments.
