Ecosystem Health Assessment

Ecosystem health assessment is the systematic evaluation of an ecosystem’s condition, resilience, and capacity to sustain biological communities and ecological functions. It combines indicators such as species diversity, population abundance, habitat quality, water or soil conditions, and nutrient cycling to compare current conditions with reference states or management goals. Biologists use field surveys, environmental measurements, and biological indicators to detect stressors including pollution, habitat loss, invasive species, and climate change. These assessments support conservation planning, restoration, environmental monitoring, and policy decisions by identifying ecological decline, tracking recovery, and guiding actions that protect ecosystem function and biodiversity.

What is an Ecosystem?

2019

Overview An ecosystem is the interaction between all abiotic and biotic factors in an environment and can be classified as terrestrial or aquatic. Terrestrial ecosystems are categorized based on the climate, including annual temperature, rainfall, and seasonality. Aquatic ecosystems are separated further into freshwater and marine, and then by depth, which influences water temperature and the amount of sunlight that penetrates the water. Terrestrial Ecosystems Terrestrial ecosystems are...

Nutrients in Aquatic Ecosystems

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Nitrogen and phosphorus are essential plant nutrients found in aquatic ecosystems and both are monitored as a part of water quality testing because in excess amounts they can cause significant water quality problems. Nitrogen in water is measured as the common form nitrate (NO3-) that is dissolved in water and readily absorbed by photosynthesizers such as algae. The common form of phosphorus measured is phosphate...

The health of wild fishes can be used as an indicator of aquatic ecosystem health. Necropsy-based fish health assessments provide documentation of visible lesions or abnormalities, data used to calculate condition indices as well as the opportunity to collect tissues for microscopic evaluation, gene expression and other more in-depth analyses.

The genitourinary system is critical to maintaining fluid balance, waste elimination, and reproductive function. Nurses play a vital role in assessing this system, beginning with a thorough health history. This process involves gathering patient information, identifying risk factors, and recognizing symptoms of genitourinary disorders. Early detection is vital for timely interventions and management.1.
