Fertility Assessment

Fertility assessment is the systematic evaluation of reproductive potential in individuals or couples, helping identify biological factors that may affect conception. In biology and reproductive medicine, it combines medical history with tests such as ovulation tracking, hormone measurements, ovarian-reserve assessment, ultrasound imaging, and semen analysis to examine egg production, reproductive anatomy, sperm quantity and movement, and related conditions. Results can clarify likely causes of infertility, estimate treatment options, and guide decisions about timed conception, assisted reproductive technologies, or further diagnostic testing. Because fertility changes with age and health, assessment also supports research on reproductive biology and personalized care.

Fertilization

During fertilization, an egg and sperm cell fuse to create a new diploid structure. In humans, the process occurs once the egg has been released from the ovary, and travels into the fallopian tubes. The process requires several key steps: 1) sperm present in the genital tract must locate the egg; 2) once there, sperm need to release enzymes to help them burrow through the protective zona pellucida of the egg; and 3) the membranes of a single sperm cell and egg must fuse, with the sperm...

The zebrafish is a powerful model system for developmental biology and human disease research due to their genetic similarity with higher vertebrates. This protocol describes a methodology to create haploid zebrafish embryos that can be utilized for forward screen strategies to identify recessive mutations in genes essential for early embryogenesis.

The present protocol describes a method for assessing ovarian reserve in patients under 25 years old who require fertility preservation through ovarian tissue cryopreservation. This method involves: (1) histological assessment of ovarian reserve in cortical samples, (2) comparison to a reference dataset, and (3) calculation of Z-scores.

In Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a form of assisted reproductive technology where an egg is fertilized with sperm in a controlled laboratory environment before transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus. This process is designed to help individuals and couples experiencing difficulties conceiving. The IVF process begins with ovarian stimulation, during which reproductive endocrinologists prescribe hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs instead of the single...
