Force Curve Analysis

Force curve analysis is a technique for measuring how a material responds to applied mechanical forces, providing quantitative information about stiffness, adhesion, and deformation. In biological research, an atomic force microscope moves a sharp probe toward and away from a cell, tissue, or biomolecule while recording cantilever deflection as a function of position; the resulting force-distance curve reveals interactions during approach and retraction. Researchers use these measurements to compare cellular mechanical properties, characterize surface adhesion, and examine changes associated with growth, differentiation, or disease. The method links nanoscale physical behavior with biological structure and function, supporting research in mechanobiology, biomaterials, and cellular diagnostics.

Hydrostatic Pressure Force on a Curved Surface

2025

Hydrostatic pressure on curved surfaces is a fundamental concept in fluid mechanics with broad applications in the civil engineering field. When fluid is in contact with a curved surface, as in a reservoir, dam, or storage tank, it exerts pressure that varies in magnitude and direction along the curved surface. To assess the total hydrostatic force exerted by the fluid on a curved structure, engineers typically isolate the fluid volume adjacent to the surface and analyze the forces acting on...

Bacterial Growth Curve Analysis and its Environmental Applications

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Luisa Ikner Bacteria are among the most abundant life forms on Earth. They are found in every ecosystem and are vital for everyday life. For example, bacteria affect what people eat, drink, and breathe, and there are actually more bacterial cells within a person’s body than mammalian cells. Because of the importance of bacteria, it is preferable to study particular species of bacteria...

Sieve Analysis and Grading Curves

Sieve analysis is a method used to determine the particle size distribution of aggregate materials. This process involves the following steps: The required quantity of dried sample of aggregate is weighed. The weighed aggregates are sieved through a set of sieves with square openings arranged in descending order of aperture size, with the largest mesh on top (Column 1 of Table 1). The stack of sieves is shaken or vibrated to facilitate the sorting of particles by size. After sieving for a...

Bending of Curved Members - Strain Analysis

2024

The mechanics of deformation in curved members, such as beams or arches, under bending moments, involve complex responses. When such a member, symmetric about the y-axis and shaped like a segment of a circle centered at point C, is subjected to equal and opposite forces, its curvature and surface lengths change significantly. This alteration results in the shift of the curvature's center from C to C', indicating a tighter curve. The important part of bending analysis for such a member is the...

Precipitation Titration Curve: Analysis

2024

The precipitation titration curve demonstrates the change in concentration of one reactant with the volume of titrant added. During the titration of chloride ions with silver nitrate, the precipitation titration curve is divided into three regions: before, at, and after the equivalence point. Before the equivalence point, low redissolution of the sparingly soluble silver chloride precipitate gives a low silver ion concentration. However, in the second region, representing the equivalence point,...
