Forceps Grasping

Forceps grasping is the controlled holding and manipulation of an object between opposing forceps tips, a basic technique for handling biological specimens and materials. It works by bringing the jaws together to apply compressive force; friction between the tips and the target resists slipping, while pressure must remain low enough to avoid crushing delicate tissues or cells. In biology, forceps grasping supports specimen transfer, dissection, tissue positioning, and microscale manipulation, with tool geometry and grip strength selected according to object size, texture, and fragility. Consistent grasping improves experimental precision, preserves sample integrity, and enables reliable observation or downstream analysis.

Estimation of Contact Regions Between Hands and Objects During Human Multi-Digit Grasping

When we grasp an object, multiple regions of the fingers and hand typically make contact with the object's surface. Reconstructing such contact regions is challenging. Here, we present a method for approximately estimating the contact regions by combining marker-based motion capture with existing deep learning-based hand mesh reconstruction.

Frame-by-Frame Video Analysis of Idiosyncratic Reach-to-Grasp Movements in Humans

This protocol describes how to use frame-by-frame video analysis to quantify idiosyncratic reach-to-grasp movements in humans. A comparative analysis of reaching in sighted versus unsighted healthy adults is used to demonstrate the technique, but the method can also be applied to the study of developmental and clinical populations.

Drosophila Adult Brain Dissection: A Method in Fly Neurobiology

2023

This video describes how to dissect and isolate the adult Drosophila brain–a procedure necessary for visualizing the organ, which is otherwise obscured by the cuticle, eye, and tracheal tissue. The example protocol shows a detailed demonstration yielding high-quality preparations that can be used for immunostaining and imaging methods in Drosophila neurobiology.
