Glass Bead Lysis

Glass bead lysis is a mechanical method for breaking open cells to release intracellular proteins, nucleic acids, and other biological molecules. It works by mixing a cell suspension with small glass beads and vigorously agitating the mixture, causing bead-to-cell collisions and shear forces that disrupt cell membranes and, in some organisms, rigid cell walls. The method is useful for processing microorganisms and other tough-to-lyse samples when chemical or enzymatic treatments are insufficient. By enabling efficient cell disruption without relying on detergents or lytic enzymes, glass bead lysis supports downstream applications such as DNA, RNA, protein, and metabolite extraction.

The Looking Glass Self

2025

The concept of the looking-glass self describes how an individual's self-concept is shaped by their perception of how others see them. This psychological theory, first introduced by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley in 1902, posits that self-identity emerges in a social context and is influenced by the judgments—real or imagined—of others.Research suggests that individuals frequently overestimate how positively others perceive them. This is particularly evident in physical self-perception,...

Tissue Homogenization and Cell Lysis

2023

Tissue homogenization involves disintegrating tissue architecture and lysing cells, and is an early step in isolating and analyzing cellular components. The method used for homogenization depends on the sample type, the amount of sample available, the analyte to be obtained, and the sensitivity of the method. These methods are broadly classified as mechanical and non-mechanical methods. Mechanical methods of tissue homogenization These methods rely on applying external physical force to disrupt...

A Technique for Magnetic Glass Particle-Mediated Nucleic Acid Extraction from Blood

2025

This video demonstrates a technique for nucleic acid extraction from whole human blood using magnetic glass particles (MGPs) — small magnetic beads coated with silica. Upon lysing the blood cells using a lysis buffer, the released nucleic acids bind to the surface of silica-coated MGPs, extracting the molecules from the sample.
